D__TH P_N_LTY
This has just been discussed on The One Show on BBC and I would like to share my thoughts.
In the most part I agree that this should be brought back but only in certain cases and I have my reasons.
13th July 1955 Ruth ELLIS hanged for killing her lover with a revolver. She killed him ten days after he had hit her causing her to lose her pregnancy and this wasn't the first time he had beaten her.
She hadn't just fired once she emptied the revolver into him and was arrested by an of duty officer who found her still holding the gun.
There was an uproar upon her conviction and many turned up to the prison on the eve and the morning of her hanging. She was the last female to be hanged in England.
Many have since stated that she suffered from battered woman syndrome and that she wouldn't of been convicted of murder today.
This case I don't think I would vote for the death penalty but obviously I would want to review all of the paperwork and know the history surrounding the day in question. On the other hand there are plenty and I mean plenty of people that could be looked at to hang/face the firing squad.

The list could go on couldn't it????
But should we bring back hanging which was finally abolished in 1969??? Is this the next step?? Would this deter this type of person from raping or killing as that's all Ive added. What other offences would you add to the list??
I don't think it would help. America have the death penalty, and does it keep violent crime down there? No, they have more of it than we do, so if it is part of the solution it's not particularly effective by itself. They also use horrible, unreliable methods to perform their executions which I most certainly would not like to see here.
ReplyDeleteBut really, actually the reintroduction of the death penalty would be one of the few things that might make me emigrate. I don't think it's very likely to happen though - people keep talking about it, but I think that's mostly just to generate viewers and pageviews and advertising clicks as it's bound to start a debate.
No, the taking of human life is a great wrong, and the state should not get into the business of killing its own citizens. (Don't get me started on invading places. We did it, maybe it was necessary, but wars are not the best way to solve anything at all except when somebody else starts it).
hanging is too good for some of this scum. they have taken from their victims they should made to pay a lot some with their lives and I like the picking up dog poo remark as well.
ReplyDeleteShariah law is starting to sound good!!!
Er, death penalty would tick the vengeance box, but given the risk of non reversible miscarriages of justice, it would require an extensive appeals process. That seems to create a goldmine for the lawyers, so why not just lock them up in a dark hole and throw away the key until they do the right thing and top themselves. Cheaper all round.
ReplyDeleteThe police too often respond poorly to serious crime and, under pressure, fit up a "good enough" suspect - Brum Six etc ad infinitum. The police rep would be even worse if all the MOJs had hanged these poor sods and NI would still be a war zone. Stick to the shop-lifters Sarge.
ReplyDeleteAt least it stops them doing it again. I believe the number of murders committed by time served murderers has exceeded 100. 100 people who would be alive if their killer had been executed.
ReplyDeletePeople don't leave because things are hard. People do leave because it's no longer worth it.
